The Food and Drug Administration has approved an application to import and market generic tadalafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), into the United States.
The drug is sold under the brand name Cialis. Tadalafil is the generic name for the drug.
The FDA said it’s concerned about the potential for confusion and lack of information regarding its approved uses and uses, including the effects on patients.
“We’re reviewing the application for approval,” said Janet Woodcock, M. D., director of the FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs. “There are currently no approved indications for tadalafil in the United States.”
Under an agreement between the companies, Cialis and Teva, the generic name of tadalafil will be changed to Cialis.
Teva is the manufacturer of Cialis and Cialis Tadalafil and is the exclusive licensee of the drug from the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Cialis and Teva will sell Cialis in a variety of strengths. Cialis Tadalafil is available in 20mg tablets and 30mg tablets.
Teva will sell the same strength of 20mg tablets as Cialis, according to the agreement.
The company also said that generic tadalafil will be available in strengths of 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets.
The FDA will approve the application to market the drug under the brand name Cialis. Cialis will be available in a generic form, including 20mg tablets, 30mg tablets, and 40mg tablets, and Teva, through its subsidiary Eli Lilly & Co., will also be able to sell the drug in a generic form called Tadalafil.
Teva is the manufacturer of Cialis.
Teva said in an emailed statement that the application for the drug is not authorized by the FDA and that it will only be approved by the FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs. It’s unclear what the drug will be approved for and whether the drug is available as a generic or brand name.
The drug’s label will include information about tadalafil. The drug is approved for use in patients who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction.
